Five Yard Dog: Bio

Michael Moxley - bass, vocals

He loves bass, has bass, plays bass. Sings when asked to. Holds doors open for the elderly.

Michael didn't start playing bass until his late twenties while living in a small mountain community named Auberry in the foothills above Fresno CA. He played from 1977 to 1985 in various mountain and Fresno area bands. He then took a 17 year hiatus from bass playing until starting back up again in 2002 while living in Santa Clarita CA.

For 4 ½ years he was bass player and lead vocalist for The Moxie Blues Band, a dynamic blues-rock trio based in Santa Clarita CA. They played a choice collection of older and newer blues covers in a style all their own, along with some powerful originals. The band reached far greater heights than first envisioned. They opened for blues legends Robben Ford, Joe Bonamassa, John Mayall & The Bluesbreakers among others, closed a concert for the one and only Johnny Winter and opened for The Drifters. They also performed for numerous charity events sponsored by the Los Angeles City Fire Department and the LAFD Fire Hogs motorcycle club. However, in March 2009 The Moxie Blues Band dissolved. It was time to move forward with a group of his own. His playing with the 'Moxie crew' for those 4 ½ years proved to be a great education. Finally, Michael felt ready to make the jump to bandleader and so Five Yard Dog was born.

Dave Asmussen - guitar

He's a bluesman with a rock 'n roll heart. A mesmerizing blend of tone, touch, timing and taste.

Dave started playing guitar due to being a friend of the great Randy Rhoads of Ozzy Osbourne and Quiet Riot fame. He grew up in Burbank and started playing guitar seriously at age 17. Among his early influences were the artists Ten Years After, Johnny Winter, ZZ Top, Led Zeppelin, and The Who. Dave played in ‘garage bands’ around Burbank and the San Fernando Valley until the mid-80's when he joined the band Merger, a 5-piece rock band that enjoyed playing the Hollywood circuit and top clubs in the SFV for two years. When Merger disbanded Dave spent several years raising a family and BMX racing with his two sons.

He finally got serious about guitar again in 1997, going back to his rockin' blues roots. Dave worked diligently on his blues chops for several years before founding The Moxie Blues Band with Michael Moxley and Carlos Calvillo in the summer of 2004. Dave briefly took a break from performing in 2009 but we're happy to be back together and have him on board as the centerpiece of Five Yard Dog.
